This posting was apparently lost during maintenance so is being reposted. To the first person who answered it, the boat was operated out of Monterey, California and traveled up and down the whole California coast. Posted by monterey_joe on Sunday, May 14, 2006 - 08:58 pm: In the late 40's I went commercial fishing with my father in a Monterey hulled double ender with a four cylinder diesel, green in color, and weighing about 4000 pounds. It was hand cranked using a 14 inch or so bar which was inserted into the approximately 500 pound external flywheel after priming each cylinder with gas and releasing the compression. It was rated at 40 hp. Lormer or whatever the spelling was, as I remember it was part of a hyphenated name and I can't remember what the second part of the name was and it's driving me crazy. It was a rather slow speed engine. It pulled about a 30 inch by? prop via direct drive at an amazing top speed of 650 rpm. I'm pretty sure it was very old (acquired used) as it had to be pulled when it broke a crankshaft and a replacement shaft could not be found. Does anybody know the full name of that engine and who made it. I would like to research it. |

Thank you Richard. I believe the other engine that powered many of the smaller double enders was a Hicks and you could hear them running out there well before you could see them in the heavier fog. It was also made in the Bay Area (San Francisco). Monterey Joe |
