I’m having trouble with my fuel supply to my Palmer M-60. Last season my fuel filter would collect all sorts of sludge from the tank. It would overwhelm the filter and end up clogging the carb. No problems once I cleaned the carb though. I added a disposable inline paper fuel filter downstream of the primary filter that has helped but I’d like to clean the sludge out of my tank. It is an aluminium 20-gallon tank with a filler pipe from the cockpit sole. I should have pulled the tank out when I had the engine out for a rebuild last year but I can’t do it now. Any suggestions apart from the obvious dumping carb cleaner etc into the tank? |

The only real way to deal with dirt in a fuel tank is by mechanial action to dislodge the dirt and corrosion flakes and then rinse them out. As a stop gap measure, you could put a short stand pipe up into the tank ( 1/2 in should do it) if the outlet of the tank is on the bottom of the tank, or cut off the pipe so that it about a 1/2 in above the bottom of the tank, if your fuel line comes in at the top of the tank. In effect, your trying to keep you fule inlet above the crud layer. miro |
