Hi, On a 1948 R3M which I have the previous owner took the flywheel off and obliterated all markings on the block or the flywheel for TDC. So what will be the best way to set the timing when I refit the magneto? I guess I have to do this with the head off. |

Remove the sprak plug and use a piece of timber dowel and mark it when at its highest point. Once you feel it is accurate then file a decent Vee at the edge of the flywheel (12 o'clock position) with a file. |

On my R3M the magneto mark at which point you want the contacts to start to open is about 1 inch round the flywheel from the TDC marker once you've got that. Haven't got the engine to hand but I think it's clockwise from the TDC line if you're looking at the flywheel end of the engine (or I guess you shuould be able to work out which side it should be if your memory of the workings of these things is better than mine). |

Ben to answer your questions ......... The gearbox and the magneto drive chain are connected so that the oil serves both .Just make sure you dip stick indicates that there is enough oil . The crankcase ......on these sort of engines there is always an accumulation of oil in the crankcase. It is the oil from the petrol /oil fuel mix . Some time is is advisable to loosen the small plug on the side of the crank case and drain it off. If there is too much accumulation it carries over into the combustion chamber and fouls the plug .........I have fitted a 1/8th BSP cock on my engines. Timing The M mark on the flywheel is before TDC. This mark indicates when the point are opening |

Hi Peter. Thanks very much for your reply. Could the fact that the dipstick never went below half full mean that there's a blockage somewhere? |

Ben ,there isn't anything to block . the dipstick registers the amount of oil in the gear box ....lubrication of the chain drive for the magneto relies on the gearbox oil being thrown around [ same oil]. I'll read your post again and see if i can get your meaning! The fact that the dipstick never reads less than half full indicates that your oil seals are in good condition |
