Anyone (in Britain) know where I could source a good quality replacement Bukh DV10 engine? I'm restoring my old Seamaster 23 but on inspection the engine looks like it's not worth the expense of a rebuild. Any ideas of costs? |

Peter, You are fairly right in saying BUKH spares are pricy, as I've also more or less overhauled a yachtmaster here in Cobh, Co.Cork from being a clapped out model DV10, to an engine which now turns off the starting handle and does all it should be doing. Possibly the one I've done was in worse condition than your own, with water contaminated engine, gearbox plus all electrics. But, glad to say a success story in the end for the owner in question. Biggest snag for me was engine removal/replacement out through the cabin door (gearbox disconnected!) If it were mine I would have cut a hole to suit on the engine coaming & re-fiberglassed afterwards! Still, always a hard way and an easy way! I got BUKH spares from a different supplier in UK. Can give details by email if you wish. |

I certainly have an idea of the cost having been in exactly the same posiytion with the same boat. So my engine had a top end re-build by previous owner. That cost £300 in parts. I bought the engine, then it seized because of oil leaks. I had a bottom end re-build. Cost was £600 parts + £200 labour - a retired engineer who charged just £8.50 an hour. (A full engine seal kit £300 - I mean the Bank of England should start printing them at those prices). He put the engine back, but oil pissing out. Discover the oil return has a crack, so he makes up a replacement pipe. Engine then takes me from Swansea to Waterford 30 hrs. Then I found I have water in the oil. Turns out the water pump is at fault. Kit just fitted £100. BUT leaking oil - find out the dip stick pipe has a hairline crack, so we're replacing that. Maybe I'll have a reliable engine after that. Maybe I'll be able to beach it & get the drop keel to come down. Alternatives: Factory rebuild - costed it at about £1,800 including transport. You get the best job going + they bench test for 10 hrs so it avoids the things that go under the general heading of 'Lifes Rich Tapestry'. You could buy 2nd hand - if you do it needs to be local. You could get an alternative engine if you do. Yanmar GM10 will fit & having an engine that was not designed 40 years ago can only be a good thing. I now realise why small old boats have even older engines. New ones would come in at about £5K for a new GM10 engine if you get someone to fit it & a new prop & shaft. Interestingly at Bukh when I told them about the water in the oil & the fact it had rusted the valve springs, they did seem very concerned. No problem was the general idea. Mine at least starts quite easily now (for a 35 year old engine). Do I love it - No. Do I hate it - no. Am I opening a bottle of wine. Yes. [email protected]. Happy to exchange info on the futility & misery of it all |

Aha - do I recognise the echoes of a familiar misery? Enjoy the wine, and may it - even temporarily - dull the frustration of not finding a satisfactory solution despite putting a lot of time, effort and cash trying to find the solution to your engine woes. My old Bukh was severely neglected through a combination of ignorance and idleness, yet still faithfully pushed dear old Rosie through the water whenever the wind dropped. Until the day the engine didn't sound 'right'. And the smoke changed colour, and the oil pressure dropped, and it stopped. After the replacement of the warped head it never worked well again. Now it sits in my shed on an impressively sturdy bench I spent a weekend making over three years ago. My intention was to strip it down and do a careful rebuild. Then life got in the way, and there it still sits glowering at me, malevolently. This summer my will broke and I asked this forum for help. A lovely guy in Germany sold me his Bukh DV10 (almost new) at an incredible price. Even Bukh themselves said the model number was OK. Of course when it arrived it was a beautiful example of a Ruggerini engine, not a Bukh at all. But it was so shiny and new looking. I rigged up a fuel supply and coolant and ran it. It worked, and sounded fabulous, and smelled like a lovely little diesel should. So I was entranced and didn't summon up the energy and gumption to send it back to him. Now I have an engine that only a mechanical genius with a full workshop of tools can make talk to the original gearbox. I'm lucky enough to live within eyeshot of the sea. Almost every time I glance at it a tiny but quietly insistent voice gnaws at me to get on with it and sort it all out. I wish I was more like all the other people who own boats - experienced and sage. I also wish Andy Tuck lived nearby, because if ever there was someone who could sympathize with his woes over a bottle or two of good wine, it is me. Makro do good deals on the caseful Andy. |

Help needed! I have a Bukh DV36 and on inspection this weekend I noticed emulsified oil leaking from the gearbox breather and when I removed the dipstick it began to seriously come out. I suspect the final drive shaft seals whichI intend to replace. But how do I get the water out of the gearbox ? please reply to [email protected] |
