Anybody have any info on easthope marine engines,they were used extensively on the west coast of british cloumbia and washington. I have 2cyl.one in running condition with transmission |

Mechman, this is a bit late, but I would bet you have a Palmer YT-1 with a CUNO timer stuck on where the magneto drive was. Comments Dick, or have I missed the bus? |

Alan, you are not dreaming, but the last one I saw sold for over 2K, fully rebuilt with new head & cylinder - now 'unobtainium' Your best bet is to find one and have it restored by someone in the hobby, if you don't want to do that yourself. If you want a boat with one in it already, I can think of a couple that might be available now, or in a few years. The only two I know of in fact. |

Robert, Mechman's, engine looks like a YT-1 to me. You can see the boss with the hole for the magneto drive gear box. Oil drip pipe for the foward crankshaft bearing and bronze push rod guide. Mechman you can get a copy of the YT-1 manual from Andrew. I can send you a sheet on timing the valves if you decide to strip the engine down for rebuilding. The name plate and serial number should be on the forward face of the cylinder just below the priming cup. if it was made up until about 1930. Later engines had the serial no. plate on the port mounting wing aft end. You would expect to find 6/32 screw holes about 2-5/8" apart in one of those locations. The shift in about 1930 was because when a cylinder was replaced the serial number of the engine went with it. Post 1925 YT-1 engines have a oil level drain cock on the lower aft starboard face of the crankcase. Post 1937 YT-1s have a cast iron breather valve on the aft starboard upper face of the crankcase which replaced the early bronze unit. Post 1937 YT-1 have an expanded portion of the crankshaft housing which accomadates a modern lip seal whereas YT-1 up until 1937 the crankcase housing for the crankcase is essentially the same diameter for the full length. Modern lip seals work fine as replacements. The early seal was felt in two metal cups that retained the oil and also sucked up salt water to erode the shaft hence the change to a lip seal. The YT-1 is very popular with collectors as they idle down well and run all day long with little attention. Hope yours is in good condition. Can we see more photos?? |

In addition to the easthope 4/6 i have a perko steering box with wheel and rod, a rudder with packing gland stainless prop shaft with prop and an adjustible stuffing box. I"m thinking of getting rid of the whole lot. If interested contact at Jarrell cumquat@net zero.net Thankyou! |

I own "EVA" a 30 ft.cedarplank gillnetter built by Suzuki in1937 for Henry Jacobson. EVA has a 10/18 Easthope # 51 55 53 ,which often starts on the first flip of the flywheel. I put over a hundred hours of use on the boat every year, but untill I get off my duff and hook up the heat exchanger, I won't take her out in the salt water.EVA lives at Finn Slough in Richmond and cruises all around the lower Fraser river. |

I believe Eva is well-known as a very early boat and perhaps the only boat of her age still with her original engine? Wasn't she written up in The Westcoast Mariner a while back? Finn Slough is a magical little place, a kind of time capsule. I recommend a visit to anyone who is in the Richmond area. |

For Al Mason...the engine in the Eva was built in 1951 so it would seem it was not the original engine. Harry Jacobsen purchased the engine new in 51 for Eva. Your 10-18 is really a 10-14 and I wish you would hook up the heat exchanger and come out in the islands so we can all see and hear her..........regards......Joe |

Al do you still have the Eva....I have a boat in Anacortes, Wa with a 3 cylinder Easthope...do you have a source for parts? |
