The following came in by email from Bill:

Questions that first come to mind are: 1. Is there any technical info available (manuals, etc) 2. What was the original colour scheme for this engine 3. Can anyone date the engine 4. Assume it is a 3HP? 5. Given oiler in base, what oil/gas ratio should one use? 6. Any advice on how the two speed controls interact? Have read all the posts that come up with a 'Stanley' search. That's a nice complete engine Bill. Most of the two cycles I've dealt with are jump spark, use timing for the main speed control, carb can be throttled for a slower idle. I don't know how much range of advance and retard the ignitor will give, you may need the throttle. What's the shaft by the carb, is there a barrel valve in the tranfer port? |

I have no idea what that shaft is for. This is the first Stanley I have seen and it has not been stripped down as yet. My neighbour is currently repainting one of his cars so expect it will be a while before he get to the Stanley. I'll try to get more pictures as he takes it apart and will advise when they are posted |

I have a scan of a 1911 "Rudder" magazine with a Stanley ad showing Bill's engine pretty closely. The M&B fixed point is not that ball shape but the rest is. There is also another Stanley 1911 "heavy duty" with a different air pre-heater design. Still uses a Schebler but not as neat in the piping to/from the pre-heat area or the crankcase. I would say this is a "1911" or so |

Bill, I looked at all the pages of scanned original or Xerox stuff on the Stanley I have. It appears your friends engine (same one) is pictured from a 1909 Rudder Magazine, 1911 Rudder and a 1916 Motor Boat magazine. The "Heavy Duty" model (not your friends) is a big center fold shot from 1911 |
