I have a Volvo MD1 that is running fine. Other boat owners I have spoken with suggest I use a new synthetic oil (Mobil 1) to help improve lubrication at start up. It sounds like a good idea but on the other hand it has been running fine for 35 years with good old 30 weight. Any thoughts on this?

I recommend adding Lucas oil additive. It has stopped an oil leak in my 92 Volvo car. Also I use it in my boat which has twin Palmer Marine
Diesel D301 and have increased my oil pressure
by 5lb. Most auto part stores carry it. It really
works.

Make sure that the oil is rated for use in a diesel engine. Oil rated for gasoline engines only is not suitable for use in diesel engines. It will be noted on the container. Other than that, use the viscosity rating recommended by the manufacturer. I would think that 10W-40 or 15W-40 would be good. The key to engine longevity is keeping the oil and oil filter changed regularly.
