Palmer BH 25 gear reduction? |

I know the BH 25 was just the BH with a reverse gear attached but I can't tell if it also had a reduced gear ratio? If it did, can anybody here tell me what it was (forward and reverse). Thanks |

The BH in later years became the BH-25. The change appears to be to distinguish the BH-25 with the shift from a Snow and Nabstedt reverse gear and the adoption of Cubic Inch displacement for all Palmer engine model. This took place some sometime about 1953. The BH-25 predessors were the BH which lasted only a few months due to needle bearing problems. This was solved with the change to a larger crankshaft and Timpken roller bearings. That model was the BHT. The next iteration was the BHW with a Palmer manufactured water pump. All earlier models came as bob tail (no reverse gear) or with a Snow and Knabstedt reverse gear. The shift to the Paragon OXKB reverse gear came with the introduction of the BH-25 provided a "no" reverse gear opition, a reverse gear with direct drive or a two to one reduction add on or a 3 to one reduction gear option. The OXKB itself is widly available as good useable junk as it was used both on the Palmer and Uneversal engines in the under 30 horsepower range. Don't however confuse that statement with the fact the housings supplied by the engine makers were unique to their engines and you cannot bolt up a Palmer OXKB reverse gear housing to a Universal engine or vice versa. Just the guts are the same. There is one bearing in the OXKB called the "Taunton" bearing and if it goes you are in trouble. Go find another junk OXKB and you might find a useable bearing. The other bearings and the seals are common and can be obtained at any bearing and seal dealer. OXKB reverse gears to be modified for Reduction gears require the reverse gear tail shaft be changed from the direct drive model as the tail shaft is a little longer for mating with the pinion in the reduction gear. Reduction gears are very difficult to find as most BH-25 and its successor the PW-27 were used with a reverse gear but direct drive with no reduction gear. That is about all I can supply |
