Hi all,

I have a Buchanan Midget that doesn't want to run. There was some corrosion under the dist. cap after this winter's storage, and I dealt with it all. Does anyone know what the proper points gap is for this engine? I sanded the points a bit and set 'em to 16 thou. Not good, so far. Any help would be appreciated.

James,
If it is a 4 cylinder .020 in is fine. Your setting of .016 won't cause a "no spark" condern. 4 cylinder engines are not very fussy about point gap because the points are closed for such a long time. (dwell usually around 50 deg) Does it have spark at the plugs? When diagnosing an ignition system always make sure you have spark at the end of the longest sparkplug wire. (the greatst distance from the coil) The first quick check is at the coil. But that won't tell you if the cap and rotor are ok.
Hope this helps
Ernie

Fisrt crank the engine with the cap off and see if the points spark each time they open. You can have grit on them or maybe shorted.

Have a close look at the spot on the side of the distributer where the wire from the condensor terminates. Whenever my Midget starts acting up, I check here for dirt and oil. This terminus is supposed to be electrically isolated from the body of the distrib, so any dirt or corrosion here causes trouble.

Hope that helps!
