Hello all, I am looking for a very low rpm diesel engine in the 30 to 50 hp range to put in a displacement boat I am building. I really like the low speed engines and I need something interesting to tinker with anyway. My current favorite is a Kelvin K2 but I want to make sure I am not overlooking any other suitable engine. Also, the more options I have, the more likely I can find a good engine. Thanks, Amos |

try New Zelland esp the Waikato River where a lot of the old 2 cylinder K2 were used... I have been looking for some 4 years ( 2002 I posted here looking for one of these 44 hp "Beast" for a Tug Project... The Project is growing too much for the 44 hp but I did talk to several builders there... Good Luck I have not found one in Four years looking.. see my listing at the bottom on the page.. Write to Raymond... he is great!! Also check with me later I will check my file for names and addresses... [email protected] is my new address |

http://www.prestonservices.co.uk/i-c.htm Try this address for older Kelvin K2 or K3.. you know this is going to cost a king ransom also they still make a 20 bhp single cylinder Lester wt is about 500K ,, turns about 1000 rph to get that power.. could turn it slower.. |

I have also been considering some of the Indian Lister clones that are available up to 28 hp now but they don't have some of the old marine engine characteristics such as a single flywheel and broad rpm range. Thanks Bruce for the link and some ideas about where to look. Amos |

Family had fishing boat with Lister twin cyld. CE model with one flywheel removed and other flywheel had about a inch thick rim shrunk on making wheel a bigger dia. Run for 30 odd years 50-60hrs a week, no problems at all. |

Bruce and others, there have not been any Kelvins on the waikato since the 1960's all went for scrap. think long and hard about the NEW Russell-Newbury's. thats the way to go and still have the old style power, looks and sound.Kelvins were a dog with petrol start.Try Robbie Robson Machinery in Whangarei for old Gardners out of excavator/draglines.and dont go below 3 cylinders. |

I HAVE HAD A LONG TALK WITH A.K. AT RUSSELL-NEWBURY IN IN ENGLAND.. THEY HAVE A FEW OF THE OLD DM-4'S THEY RETURNED FROM CANADA LAST YEAR. THE DM2 IS ABOUT 18 HP AND PUSHES A 24 *23 PROP AT 500 RPM. AS WE HAVE TWO SETS OF PLANS IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF THE POWER PLANT WILL OR CAN BE USED IN KIT II. AS WITH MANY PROJECTS THE SHIP WILL BE BUILD AROUND THE IDEA OF A CLASIC.. BUT IT WOULD BE FUN TO PUT IT IN A DONZI UNTIL THE KIT II ( OLD SEA GOING TUG FROM NORWAY). THE MORE WE HEAR ABOUT THE KIT THE MORE WE FIND OUT HOW LARGE SHE WAS.. BETTING ON A K4 NOW..THE DM4 MAYBE THE ANSWER WE NEED AS KIT II IS GOING AN EXTRA 4 FEET TO 40 FEET.. MASTER AND FIRST MATE STATEROOM WITH TWO HEADS.. VERY HEAVY STEEL VS |

Hi your project is in line with my dream too! Look up Hundeted engines, dutch Callesen semidiesels, european. Both are slow semi diesels usualy equpied with a variable, reverseble pitch props. I've seen Callesen engines listed on a european ship breaker site, and may still be made. These are just what you want for a trawler, they run around 500rpm, no trans, just the gear to adlust, reverse the prop. Reliable as the sun. The Callesen has one in the power range you want. i know this is answering an old enquiry, but properly set up, the 'K' series KELVIN marine engines are a piece of cake to start--hand or electric (although I would suggest electric start as one gets older!)--all 'K' series were originally petrol start, but quite a few in UK canal boats have been adapted to 'hot-diesel' start, thus eliminating the need for petrol in the engine room-but it then HAS to be electric start. A K4 (88hp) has enough grunt for most applications--try Kevin Whittle on www.theoilengine.co.uk---he has a couple of K4s for sale |
