The Regal Company was founded in 1901 by my paternal grandfather (Arthur E. Robinson) and four other men. The mechanical engineer who designed the engines was his son, Harold, who was a graduate of the University of Michigan. He was killed in a plane crash at the end of World War I. He had been a flight instructor in the Navy. My grandfather never could bring himself to hire another engineer. Harold was killed 11 years prior to my birth in l929. My father, Philip H. Robinson, was the company salesman. The family never wanted him to fly so he drove, went by train, car or boat, to call on the agents. He never got to agents in Europe, Africa, Eastern Asia, India or Australia. However, through correspondence and telegrams, the latter agent learned of the births of my brother, sister and myself. To our delight he sent us the skin of a young crocidile, a stuffed baby kangeroo, and a stuffed duck-bill platypus. We were the envy of the children in the neighborhood and at school. Yesterday I discovered a leaflet describing the Model "OA", Model "GB", Model "GC", Model "KC" and Model "LD" and Models "GF" and "KF". I am unsure what information would be the most helpful to you. There are diagrams of the above named models. Janet Robinson Herman hired another engineer. |

Richard, The info we have, from a newspaper article of the time, says that the Regal gasoline engine co. began in the rear of the George Shugars Bicycle Shop. If you'ld like I can send a copy of the article and I'd be interested in any info you or anyone else might have. Philip Herman |

Philip Thats probably the more acurate story, i've searched an awful lot of early info and haven't found any further reference to a Shuger engine mfgr ! Many of the early engine co's were started in bicycle shops even the Wright bros made their own engines in their Bike shop ! Can you scan the article and email it ? Double click on my name left side and email address is there . Early detailed info on these very old mfgrs is hard to come by, local libraries are best, it takes alot of time. I'll post some sequential Regal photo ads ! |

I will create a Regal category on the topics page of the board. There have been a lot of posts on Regal and this additional info will be great. Go ahead and post here and then I will move all the regal postings to the new category. Thanks! |
