I'm expecting to look at a 60s sailboat that is advertised as having a "19 hp Palmer" engine -- I've searched your archives, but havn't found reference to this particular model -- does anyone know which engine this probably is, and if parts are readily available -- also, reputation of this model Palmer --- thanks for any help, bob |

Sounds like the "HUSKIE 60, 16hsp AKA M-60, P-60. Whats the serial number of the engine? It was based on the IHC CUB tractor block which Palmer marinized from 1955 until 1973. Great little engines because most of the parts came from the local IHC dealer not some mariner. Big problem is finding a good exhaust manifold. If the engine was salt water cooled then you could have an IHC or tractor engine repair shop rebuild a junk Cub tractor block and wind up with as good as new engine. You will have to save the marine crankshaft for the rebuild as IHC ground the end to fit the Paragon transmission. Save all the marine parts and they just bolt right up. Before you spend money find out if you have a good exhaust manifold. They are hard to find |

Since this boat is located on lake ontario, I'm hoping it has not been cooled by salt water, but I will check further when I get there tomorrow -- am I to assume that you are saying that if it is not salt water cooled, the manifold will probably be o.k.? |

More likely to to be ok but don't buy it without seeing the engine run and if the seller doesn't want to run the engine then Hold back a chunk of the price in escrow in case you find you need to invest say $1500 in having the engine rebuilt. |
