I have a 20hp that looks exactly like yours except yours is missing the flywheel, mine has an original tag that says it is a 20hp. However, a 12 horse and a 16 horse look exactly the same. The only difference is the bore, the 12 horse has a 3 1/2 inch bore, the 16 a 3 3/4 inch bore, and the 20 is 4 inch. All have a 4 inch stroke. This engine was also built in a one and two cylinder version in various horsepowers again regulated by the bore. The engines date between 1910 and the 1920s. The 20 horse was offered beginning in 1915 and was refferred to as the Vanadium 20, America's standard 20 horsepower. They were rated at1200 rpm and were fairly smooth to that point, however they are shakers beyond due mostly to a non counter balenced crank.I Own 3 of them,a 1 cyl 3---4 hp 2cyl 6---8hp and the 4cyl 20.All are fine runners.I use the 6---8 in my 26' dory. |

Thanks for your quick response.I think it´s a 4 inch bore,so that we have a 20 HP engine. The crank isn´t mounted on the picturers. The only thing what is failing is the magneto.Do you have any sources for such a magneto.I think it was a BOSCH type.I need also a source for some literature about the engine. Another question: For what are the oiler valves beside the spark plugs?? Best regards Frank |

The magneto should be an American Bosch D.U.4,Hard to come by.I would suggest if you have anything left of your mag. that you contact Marks Magneto in CT. PH.(860)537-0376 He works on American Bosch and has parts. He has done several basket cases for me that came out looking and working like new.If you don't have any luck with that, a Fairbanks Morse model J-4 A will work with some modifactions to the mounts. The valves are for priming to start. If you will send me your mailing address I will send what literature I have.Good luck---John |

Try parts wanted for a mag. on this web site. I've had some luck there.--John |
