I have been restoring a 16' clinker launch (Tyson built) which came with a 4HP Vinco engine. The engine was not in the boat but I have had it running briefly in the shed.
I am getting close to installing the engine but am a bit baffled by the previous installation. There are two water inlets in the hull next to the bearers. One has a copper pipe which obviously goes to the water pump but the other had a piece of 3/8" rubber hose which had been cut.
For the life of me I can't figure out where this went to or why! The exhaust chamber is either new or in very good condition but underneath seems to be a spot in the casting where a hole could be drilled for perhaps a drain or something.
Any info would be greatly appreciated also any tips on careing for the engine as the boat will be kept on the water when finished.

Glen,
If the Muffler is cast iron then it is most likely water jacketed.
The water inlet is on top at the engine end and has a bronze right angle tube from the head to the muffler.
The water outlet is generally on the bottom of the muffler at the other end.
It could be that the the second thru hull fitting is for the water return.
Usually you would return the water to the exhaust pipe but sometimes this is not possible if the exhaust has to go up to much of a hill.

I have finished restoring the boat and the engine is a ripper. I had to make a new float for the carburetor and had a new piston ring made. If anyone is interested I will have the boat at the next Davistown Putt Putt Regatta on the 30 Oct 05. The boat is called Jerry, white with maroon deck. Just look for the black & white dog with socks on.
Purist's forgive me, the engine is not painted original colour yet.

Hi Chris,
Change of plan at last minute and was unable to get to Davistown. The engine is running well and the boat a pleasure to be on.
The Heritage Afloat festival is on at Toronto, Lake Macquarie over Easter. As this is only down the road I will enter the boat. There is also a Putt Putt Weekend at the SASC (Sydney Harbour) around March I will try to get to.
