I am having difficulty in locating a starter motor for my 4-75. The AutoLite number is MZ-4045. This is a 6 volt starter. I am converting to 12v so if I can find a 12v version that would also be fine. Any help would be appreciated. Joe |

Joe - If your starter is like mine on a 4-75, it has no outboard bearing to support its shaft. Be extra careful to change both wires from the battery to the smaller size usually associated with 12 volts, and to not use a very powerful (cranking amps) battery. In other words, limit the available amperage. Despite advice that no starter changes were needed for this conversion, I can speak with direct knowledge. I left the heavy 6volt wiring in place and used a very heavy duty battery. Boy did it crank good! Eventually my 6volt starter on 12 volts broke its shaft one spring morning. The repair was over $300. There are many starters, especially in the tractor field, available that may seem to fit the hole. Everyone of them I found would almost, but not quite. Good boating. |

I have converted my graymarine 100 to an alternator. I used a hitachi LR50 which with a little work fits in the shroud which housed the generator. Has anyone attempted this conversion? I then bought a raw water pump to mount to the starboard stringer and had nade a bracket to adjust belt tension. I hope this post will help someone. Other modifications include pertronix electronic ignition, coil and pertronix ignition wires. |
