I have a freshwater PW-27 in a sailboat. Its performance under load has been steadily declining through the season. After limping back to the dock a week ago I started troubleshooting. I checked the prop for fouling, got new gas, changed the gas filter and spark plug, cleaned and gapped the points. Finally I yanked the carb and took it apart. It looked good and clean with no evidence of any of the orifices being plugged. One thing that I did note was that the gasket between the top and bottom halves of the carb was homemade. There was no hole in the gasket that would allow the brass pickup tube in the bowl to comminicate with the matching orifice in the top half of the carb.
Does anyone know if there should be a hole in the gasket for this? Thanks - Steve |

Why not just buy a NAPA carb kit 2-1565 and rebuild the carburetor. Also measure the valve gaps to make sure the clearances are reasonably correct. Over time the valve can recede into the head and that can really cut down the power. Don't pull the head as you will have trouble finding a replacement head gasket and you don't need to to measure the gaps. |

Rather than buy the NAPA rebuild kit, I would check out www.moyermarine.com (search for carb gaskets). Many of the parts in the NAPA kit are of no use (you get 3 different body gaskets for example). At Moyer you can buy the exact gasket you need. Once you get correct gasket, you can cut your own spares from gasket material for a few cents per gasket. I did that with a sharp scalpel and it works fine. Make sure you clean the carb with carb cleaner, it's hard to see the gum in places. Any aerosol spray (<$2) from an auto store should do. Also, add some gum out to your fuel tank.Ÿ |

Good suggestion Ben but myself trying to make the precise carb gaskets has been not very sucessful. I will be curious to find out if one can actually get just the wanted gasket. I don't doubt you word just what do you ask for so they will supply the correct one. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I bought the NAPA rebuild kit. The gasket was the only part that I used as I did not think I needed to rebuild the throttle assembly. That made for a pretty pricey gasket! To answer my original question, there was a hole missing in the homemade gasket. (For future reference, Moyer does have the correct gasket.)
Anyway the engine is running well now. I'm not sure which of the tweaks that I tried helped. |
