Hi all I am new here and just registered here I was wondering if anyone can help me with a question I have a 1962 sea king 40hp motor it was running very bad with some work today we found that the points were not opening much at all we eyeed them up and it runs alot better but what I need to know is what should the correct points setting be? and what is the correct way to set them up? the model# is GG18744B I hope that I can find the help I need here and maybe help out others along the way. Hi there, Your points should be set at 20 thou. .020 in I assume you are looinking in the hole in the flywheel. Turn the flywheel back and forth until you have the maximum opening. Set them at .020 in. Now rotate the flywheel 180 deg and set the other set. Also take a good look at your coils. If the covering is cracked at all they need to be replaced. You can find new coils at your local NAPA auto parts store and all the way to eBAY (search for OMC coils) The NAPA coils are nice epoxy coated ones that last forever for less than 20.00 each.
