i have a 42 utility with a 1939 gray marine 6-125 engine. i am trying to get it ready for the summer but after getting it running one time i pulled the plugs and they were very black and carboned up. also while it was running the engine was blowing some black smoke out the tail pipe. i think that it is running too rich but i am not sure how/where to adjust the mixture to be more lean. any ideas would really help.

thanks,

eric

Depends on the carburetor. You should see a small adjustable needle valve on the side or the bottom of the float bowl.It usually has a small cross bar on it.
It should be set you about 1 1/2 turns out from the fully closed setting.
Or you might try getting the enfine warm - black smoke and all - and then closing ( screwing IN ) the needle vavle until the engine begins running better - you'll be able to hear the change in the enggine sound.
Right now I'll bet it sort burps - whaeras when set right it should just tick over .
