I have been building the Atkins designed "Victor Slocum" motor launch as a "work in progress" over many months...this boat was designed to be used with the 6 hp Palmer Baby Husky. I have decided to use a 48 VDC inboard electric traction motor and need to know the maximum RPM at the output of the B.H. transmission in the forward position in order to properly size the traction motor.....your help will be appreciated. |

The BH was rated at 6 HSP at 2500 RPM. The props suggested were 10" X 6" three blade or 12" X 6" two blade prop. The BH was a left handed engine therefore required a right hand prop. Suspect with electric drive that may not be significant. |

The BH with or without a reverse gear was direct drive. Engine speed is prop speed 2500 rpm Sales literature is here Hope this helps Ernie |

Ernie, is correct. The reverse gear on the BH is the classic sun and Planet reverse but in forward it is a ball bearing straight shaft with essentially no load on the engine. |

Many thanks, Guys, for the feedback. The motor I plan to use turns 3000 RPM on 36 VDC and the supplier (EV America) recommends a 3:1 reduction and so the best I can do will be around 6.9 MPH at 75 amps at a 1.5 hour run time. At 4.6 mph, it's 22.3 amps with a run time of 5.5 hours so I'll be varying my run times and speed based on the ammeter and fuel guage (battery reserve guage). I'll be using six 6 VDC Trojan T105 batteries at 220 amphour each |

One more thing I wanted to add.....the motor I've selected will run on 24 VDC up to 72 VDC.....at 72 VDC, it will power a VW "Beetle" up to 45 mph.....it is series wound like the starter on a car ....referred to as a "traction motor" I think. The horsepower rating of 4 is "continous horsepower" with "peak horsepower" being 2 - 3 times "continous".....not sure I really understand all there is to know about that. Well, Gentlemen, it is now February 21, 2010 and I still have not quite finished my "Victor Slocum" boat having spent some time on a 63" radio controlled steam model of Weston Farmer's "Diana" but definitely plan to have "Victor" in the water this summer. I have not purchased the electric plant at this time and before I do, I want to explore ONE MORE TIME using a gasoline inboard w/transmission and electric starting. So my question to you is: What is my very best bet as to (1) quality of construction, (2)dependability, (3) availability of parts, and (4) availability of the engine/transmission itself. . The Palmer 6 hp "Baby Huskie" was specified in the drawings ....that would probably be my best bet but there may be a better choice...I don't know....so I would sure appreciate some feedback before I lay my money down on an electric system. The little launch I see at Mystic Seaport during the Woodenboat Show (the little "ponka.... ponka...ponka" boat) sure sounds nice, I don't know what kind of engine that is, but it really gets my attention! Anyway, I'm asking one more time for your advice and promise not to bother you guys again ! In my opinion you don't want a Palmer BH or the later PW-27 if you want Ponka Ponka Ponka... The PW-7 is a better bet as is is a Wisconsin Model AEH with a Palmer Water Cooled cylinder with Model AFH piston and connecting rod. If you want Ponka Ponka Ponke get a small two stroke and learn to reverse on the "Spark" Talk with Ernie Darrow he has had great sucess with his launch. You may have seen it at Mystic. The problem with the BH and PW-27 is they have to turn up at a relativly high rpm 2500 to 2800. The Palmer YT-1 2 HSP at 800 RPM is a four stroke so you need a reverse gear. But is does have a sweet sound. My thoughts for today. |
