We have a 1945-46 Geavette utility in which we are now having the original 1945-46 Kermath in-line 6 cylinder flat head re-built when it was found the crank had worn excessively. We though that would be the biggest problem, but that has been resolved through the wonder of nitriding.

I believe the engine to be a Sea Chief, possibly, 105 h.p. During the re-build it was noted that the exhaust manifold had developed a crack in the water jacket.

My question is this, does anyone know who made the base block for this motor? I believe it to be a Hercules block, but I am not certain.

Were there any other manufacturers that used the same base block? I checked with a company called Barr Marine about a replacement and they think they could provide one however they need to know all the pertinent measurements, port spacing etc. The engine uses a single zenith up draft carb.

Unfortunately I can't provide this right now as I am in Pennsyvania, the boat engine is in Sault STe. Marie Ont. and my father doesn't have the information with him to provide it to me.

If anyone has any information regarding the motor, or has a serviceable exhaust manifold in their possession please reply. Any help is appreciated.

I believe that the Kermath Sea Chief used the Hercules JX engine, but you really should verify by having someone read the model number from the engine block. Hercules stamped the number into a raised boss on the port (I think) side of the engine , just below the head.

The Buchanan Engine Co used the same blocks. It is now long gone, but in the Muskoka area ( Port Carling, Bracebridge etc) you might be lucky and find an old manifold. Try Duke Marine in Port Carling and Wye Engines in Penatanguishene. These guys have been there for decades and have lots of old parts.

Thanks for your help guys. Here's what I now know. We had the re-builder in Sault Ste. Marie Identifiy the base block. I don't have the specific number however he advised the block was a marinized (by Kermath)GM Pontiac 229 cu. in. flat head.

Do you have any idea if any other users of Gm blocks, would fit?

I will soon be working on a Kermath Sea Prince for a local Charity in southern Ontario.

Are there parts or maintenance manuals available for these engines?

Thanks,
