I see in the posts re: Palmer overheating a mention of a thermostat. I have had the cover off the head where the thermostat should go and it is flat across with a (?) sender unit where the back end of the thermostat should go. Is there a specially designed thermostat for these? I hooked up a temp gage and it never moved (bad gage?) but the water coming out the exhaust never exceeded comfortable bath water temp, judging by my hand over the side exit port. Is there a thermostat for these? Where do you get them? Thanks, especially to RA Day for all his help. |

Mark,
I'm not sure how extensively you have searched the board for the previous postings... there have been quite a lot on P60 thermostats. Try using the search term "60 thermostat" and select ALL KEYWORDS, using the search link at the top of the page.

Mark,
The thermostat for the P-60 is in a housing that has a 1/2" pipe fitting going into the exaust manifold. It is NOT in the cover with the temp sending unit. Where you think it should be is where it would be in the tractor version of the engine. The Palmer cover is made with the flat area to prevent you from making the mistake of putting the thermostat there. The Palmer thermostat has a 1 3/8" diameter flange. The Thermo Electron Palmer P-60 manual has a diagram of the cooling system. |

Mark, you can see the location of the tarnished thermostat housing on my (pre-rebuild) M-60 on the second photo of a the series of photos I put on the website under the thread "M-60 rebuild questions". |

Old type atomic 4 thermostate and houseing is the same. check out moyer marine. just make sure old type |

Just purchased a thermostat from Duby Auto & Marine (716)694-0922. Cost is 25.00 plus 10.25 for shipping. Invoice has #740T and it's 140 degree.
