Here is a question reguarding dating of Gray engines .I gather that droping the last three digits gives the year but not the decade. How do you destinguish the decade?Andrew posted pictures of 16R7673(last pictures). It has a gib key, oberdorfer water pump in front. Oilers. Internal sling ring ect. does 7673 equate to 1907, and if it was 17673 1917? Dont mean to stir the pot just curious. Might be a few days till I can read the replys and respond, am taking off for Pilot Station on the lower Yukon tomorrow for a job that is supposed to last 5 days. As the name implys the village was where the river pilots were picked up to guide the stern wheelers through the maze leading to the ocean in the early days. Dont know whats there in the way of engines but am taking a camera just in case. Thanks Al |

Dont be to quick to jump there Bob. Anything found has to be barged 1000 mi upriver just to get it to Nenana.(nearest barge point-60 mi from Fairbanks.)Was told to bring my own food and sleeping bag , kind of gives a hint of things. Al |

Al,
So far, it seems that dropping the last three serial numbers, the fourth then indicates the year of manufacture.
The decade (so far) is determined by the technological/physical properties, that changed
progessively over the years.
In the near future I guess that I should write a brief chronology of these changes and the critcal years that apply, and have Andrew post them into the Engine list for us to adjust, add to, and refine as more information is discovered.
Your engine 16R7673, indicates year of manufacture as 1907, It is a model R marine engine , but with it's spoked wheel was it sold as a stationary engine?? a different division of GRAY Co??.Much more info needed as to early years of production??
I know that a 1911 Gray catalog was published, what about earlier ones ????
This is still fun figuring out the different models made, how to better date our engines and learn some history about one of the Great Marine Engine Makers!

Month ago, some of you have given me information about a 1930 buda four cylinder engine and where i could get parts. It works !!! Thank's for that. photo of the boat are available for any body.
I'm restoring now another boat wich have been fitted with a gray marine.Only the instrument panel surviving.
We don't know the the date of the boat. It seem that the gray inst. panel is original.
We are guessing that the boat have been build circa 1920.
The question is : does a Gray instrument panel could be that old (trapezoïdal shape , made of some kind of plastic)
