I have been commissioned to model the Canadian schooner yacht CHANCE, 1926 at 1:48 scale.
She had an auxiliary powerplant in the form of a 40 HP Lathrop of this vintage. Although I won't be showing the interior, her logbook indicates driving some kind of deck winch from the Lathrop (which was below decks of course -- driving a single screw/prop)

Does anyone know if the Lathrop had provisions for some kind of auxiliary direct drive to which say, a chain might have been attached, sent up through the deck and to the drive axle of such a winch?

Perhaps some old drawings of Lathrops of that period would show such a thing?

I also have to figure out what the winch looked like, but that is a whole 'nother discussion.

Thanks for whatever suggestions or help you might provide. Would expect to pay for copies of drawings or photos -- please send particulars first.

Kind regards,

Randy Biddle

THANK YOU TO RICHARD DURGEE FROM RANDY BIDDLE - Richard, I only just last evening saw your June 2003 post, kindly answering my questions about an auxiliary drive from a Lathrop. From that information I was able to conceptualize what the connection would have been from the deck winch to the Lathrop down below, correctly position the winch on the deck, and make an all-around plausible facsimile. I see that you are very generous with your knowledge on many topics, and I applaud you for that.

I would thank you directly by email, but don't have your address.

Thanks again for helping resolve a nettlesome problem in the construction of this scale model.

Kindest regards,

Randy Biddle
