We received the following from David Legge. Thanks for sharing your research David.:
quote:To whom it may concern: I had been told, by a number of folks, that a make and break marine engine had been designed and produced by a Newfoundland company between 1940 and 1950. While researching the Barnes engine I came upon the Old Marine Engine website. Unfortunately, the Barnes was not listed on your list of pre-1940 engine manufactures properly because it was not sold until 1945. I did however find a few web-discussion-postings regarding the Barnes that provided me with some contact names of which were very helpful. Further research led me to the Centre for Newfoundland Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Carl White, who informed me that E.F.Barnes created the Barnes engine, answered my inquired. He also explained that the first engine was sold in 1945 and was developed at Barnes Machine Works on Waldegrave Street in St. John's, Newfoundland. The engine was no longer produced after the early 1960's, although parts for them were still being sold until 1979. In the early sixties, E. F Barnes company focused on shipbuilding and actually built Newfoundlands first iron ship, the Cobbs Arm. The ship, then considered the first of its kind, was the largest vessel launched in the port of St. Johns in more than a century. E.F Barnes company continues to operate in St. Johns to this day. Now call D.F. Barnes Limited, the company focuses on manufacturing, fabricating and repair services in the marine, offshore oil and gas, and industrial sectors. D.F Barnes can be found on the web at www.dfbarnes.com I thought that the inclusion of this information may be of interest to those who visit your website, or at least it may spark some discussion regarding the history of the Barnes Engine. Sincerely David Legge
