Keith Plugged in open crankcase, F head, 4 cycle, into my system that still has a long way to go, but these names came up 1.Campbell--- I think these had spoke flywheels. 2. Clifton 3. Craig, James 4. Erie Pump & Eng 5. Grizzly Bear- Parrot & Harter 6.Hurd & Hagen 7. Symphony May not even be one of these ? I'll see what I can find photo ads of each, unless someone puts a name to it! |

Earliest Campbell photo ad i can find 1906. Doesn't seem to be a match 1.Spoked flywheels up through 1910-11. 2.Square cast cylinder supports 1910-1911. 3.Does have the copper bands on bottom of cylinders,I guess for heat dissipation lower cylinder ?? Comments ! |

None of the 7 names above seem to be the unknown, all of the bases are different, The Grizzly Bear made in Olympia, Washington has a very similar cylinder support design ? 1912 picture. May be a clue to a west coast heritage ?? Any other info on this one yet ?? |

Richard, it does not match my Campbell. Do you know if Campbell changed after the dates shown on #1 and #2 of your Campbell post? My engine has spoked flywheel, and square posts. I have never dated my Campbell. |

Refering back to the engine pictures posted above by Keith... bjco has posted something on the classifieds and is describing it as follows:
quote:The only reference to this engine I could find is in the July-August 1969 issue of the HORSELESS CARRIAGE GAZETTE.It pictures a 1903 Stewart 3-clinder Racing Engine and a add showing a race car made by ALFRED C.STEWART CO. (incorporated) 1008 Santee Street LosAngles,Cal. In 1905 advertisement for Stewart racing car Frank Garbutt attained a speed of 64.2 mph on the Agricultural Park Race Track in Los Angeles. For photos of my engine look under O.M.E discussion board Multi Cylinder Inboards Unknown Open Crank.

Richard, my notes have Palmer-Moore circa 1907 (trade name Moore) as an open crankcase Syracuse NY motor.See Wendel page 377.Not Keith's motor. |

Bruce, Palmer -Moore definately an engine I'd like to own, they advertised if its 2 cycle and open based its a "Palmer-Moore" , but there were other 2 cycle open base engs made. The list above was limited to 4 cycle engs ! |

Forgot to say that the only perceptable changes were to the external oiling system, the entire year of 1909 this ad prevailed and the front oiler looks to me exactly like on your eng ?? |

I was told my engine was in a boat that sank in 1907, and it was used in a ferry in the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. I never believed the 1907 part, because the story was all wrong. It could be a 1907 motor, and sank later. Thank you for the ads, they are great. It makes me want to get the Campbell running. |

Miro, seems I recall a Muskoka party that had a hull built for his restored Campbell 4cyl marine engine. I'm sure I saw it at the Port Carling ACBS meet years back ???? |

Bruce Sorry to cut in, but I wonder if you're thinking of a boat called the Lightning. This boat was a 1900's style beaver tail displacement launch built to showcase a 10 hp 1905 four cylinder open base Standard. The boat was built to order in the late 1940's by Bert Hawker (late of Ditchburn) who may have patterned it on a similar racing hull built in Toronto in 1907 called Little Star II. |

Thanks steve fox- It's been a while- no doubt it's the Standard I'm thinking of......this discussion makes me want to look again for the open crank engine carcus I was shown here years ago on the mud flats @south end of Cayuga lake. |

Steve is correct - the boat is called Lightning -it is a direct drive - so when you start the engine, you gotta be pointing away from the dock. The engine was refurbished maybe 15 years ago by Paul Dodington - the DisPro guy ( www.disappearing propellerboat.com). I haven't sen it lately, - there were sheet metal shields around the engine area to contain the oil thrown out from the open crank ( I'll try to find some pictures and post them). It had a standup chain crank arrangement and it was relatively quiet as I recall. miro |
