So how was the engine used to drive the boat?

I have seen other pictures and plans of this sort of ice boats... the large disc you see encloses a steel wheel with "teeth" to grab the ice. I'm not sure how it was geared to the engine... I bet it had a mighty fast top end...

here is one, has a henderson 4 cylinder in it. ignore the wheels, they are to roll it around during summer
