| Info on a Niagara 4 cyl marine engine? |

Has anyone ever heard of a Niagara marine engine. I live in BC Canada and I know of one for sale, it is a small four cylinder with a flywheel on both ends of the crank. I can't describe it much more than that because I haven't seen it yet but I was curious on how rare something like this was and what it might be worth?

Stephen,
A Niagara is a very nice marine engine. If you engine you are looking at has a flywheel on both ends it is probably a "stationary version" of the marine engine.
It is difficult to say how much it is "worth". Generally value is not based on how "rare" a marine engine is, but rather how well made, unique, or interesting it is.

The history of the "Niagara" began in june,1904,
when Louis Ducro of the Ducro Manufacturing Co.,
made the first Niagara motor in his plant on Niagara street,Buffalo, N.Y.From the begining they
established themselves as one of the very high
grade marine engines in endurance and power and
recognised as a pioneer in the industry. In 1909
ARAB III owned by Ralph Sidway of Buffalo,captured a 25 mile speed and endurance
race and up until 1912 Niagara motors were prominent in international and national displacement boat events and winning many trophies. In 1912 The Niagara Motors Corp., built
a new and very modern plant on the shore of Lake Erie in Dunkirk,N.Y. 1916 Charles Narraway came
on board as V.Pres and sales mgr.1917 production of engines ceased because of war effort.Trucks, tanks and aircraft parts were manufactured until
1922 when Narraway took over ownership and began once again to make quality marine engines.

Stan Grayson's book 'BEAUTIFUL ENGINES" on pgs 88 and 89. |
