I have a P-60 in our 1939 sloop. I rebuilt it several yrs ago, putting a new multilayer metal head gasket on. My specs (typed piece of paper 30 yrs old) says that torque on the head is 35lbs. On one of these threads several of you mentioned 45. Which is right? I've had water leaking into the oil plus difficult starting, maybe this is the reason. I added copper goop to the gasket (which was the way it was when I dismantled it) but the tractor shop guy said no goop. Now it doesn't start at all and compression is way down and it won't even start. Ideas? To goop or not?

Larry,
The tractor manual says 45 lbs torque. Some Palmer experts insist that you must use soild copper head gasket. I assume you followed the propper tightening sequence. You might check the head for flatness when it is off. New heads are still being made.

You can use the tractor head gasket in fresh water or with a heat exchanger using salt water cooling. You cannot use the tractor gasket in salt water. The head if necessary can be reground in almost any machine shop that does engine rebuilding. If the head is not useable you can probably get a good used head from from a local IHC tractor dealer. Don't talk Palmer. Talk IHC CUB-LO BOY C-60 engine. The P-60 is a a IHC tractor engine that Palmer marinized and the engine parts are available from IHC tractor dealers. You can get a new head from VALU-BILT Tractor Parts Order No. A-701250 For engines with serial numbers 264568 or earlier. $185.39 WWW.VALU-BILT.COM or 1-888-826-3276. Don't talk CUB CADET that is an entirely different engine. What is the serial number of your engine? If you need a replacement head and you don't know the serial number take the old head to a IHC tractor dealer and he will recognize the head as from a CUB LO-BOY and should be able to help you locate a new or used head.

Thanks for all this great advice. But, is there any idea of torque levels for the Palmer. Would you all say 45? I've had it at 35 and this may be the only problem. My only reference to 35 comes from a faded typed piece of paper that came with the engine stuff.
The best joke with this engine was when, after a frustrating year of it running rough, I found that the insulating washer on the distrib housing was actually rusted steel. I, too, had water in that fourth cylinder with backwash, but fixed it by simply turning off the water before shutting it down. It's a learning process.

Its common for changes to be made in gasket dope or tightening spec. when changes are made in the gasket material. Most old gaskets said to use the copper coat, most new ones say no.When the change to steel rings in the gasket came out many bolt spec were increased 10ft lbs.
