Help, I have an early 50's Buchanan Junior Four. It runs perfectly for about 15 minutes, then something in the cooling system fails and the engine overheats. The pump looks fine, but I am thinking of installing an electric pump and and directly injecting water into the engine W/O a thermostat. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

I've seen a case where a chunk of the inside of the intake rubber hose acted as a flap valve and cut the water flow off. Get under the boat with a coat hanger wire to make sure yu've got a clear passage to the pump - or if you're really keen - replace the hose. I assume that you've given the grease cups a turn of two as well.
To check the operation of the water pump while the engine is running I attached a garden hose to the inlet of the pump and ran the engine to flush out any crud. You could also check the flow out of the fitting at the head outlet point ( there's usually a short length of hose that leads to the exhaust flange injector pipe which you can remove. But don't run the engine too long without cooling water into the exhaust system.
Do you have an oil cooler on your engine?

check the head gasket i had one that after it got to running temp the comp. from #2 cyl, leaked out and pressureized the block and the pump couldn,t overcome it!! |

I also have a Buchanan Junior-4 which should be circa 1934. It is out of a 1934 17' Ditchburn runabout. The serial number on the Buchanan is 172-419336. What serial numbers do you have? This should help us with authentication of the year. The transmission is an Upton. Does anyone know what Hercules series blocks the Buchanan Junior-4 was based on? We should be able to use gaskets etc. from an equivalent Chris-Craft engine presumeably the series A. |

I have a Junior 4 I would like to sell but have no idea where to post it. Here I guess!
Its a complete motor, running when I took it out of a plywood cruiser a few years ago. Stored indoors ever since. If anyone is interested please email me at jetboatin at yahoo.com
I have the strut,prop, propshaft, stuffing box etc
I will take pics soon and will do a comp test as well
