Machining question, when the old engs were made with Gib key ways the shaft was cut straight, how was the flywheel tapered keyway cut, with a tapered broach or was the guide bushing tapered, or some other way ?? |

It could be done on a shaper with the flywheel held at the correct angle, some of the larger manufactureres may have had key seaters, a table with a reciprocating cutter, the table may have been able to tilt or the flywheel could have been on a wedge shim. |

JB is right Richard. When I ran a gear shop, we had a reciprocating key cutter with a tilting table. Set-up took some care but the actual cutting time was short. Cheers Bob |
