The bevel gear covers and the bulbous part around the exhasut port look almost idential to my Gray . The bulbous part is highlighted in some Gray advertising that I have - to be scanned and posted later.
Did other enginemakers have this feature on their engines?

Here is the 1909 ad and a picture of the engine showing the water pimp. My pump is an Oberdorfer gear pump . The piston pump is located where the oiler is mounted on a Model S. So I don't think this is a Model S. I suspect that the Model S was not made after about 1912 - 13 because, by that time, the lubrication of the cylinder and the crankcase was done with the oil/gas mix, making the oiler an expensive and uncessary item.

Going through some more stuff, I looked at a catalog from about 1912 + .
The Model is described as a Sandsucker becaue of the pump. Here is a scanned picture of the page from the catalog. It very likely is a Gray engine.

Miro thanks for the posts.

I Still am not sure what the differences are between early Gray models R and Model S. Only
difference I see is that they have the same cylinder and crankcase castings, that bolt together, but the S has a support cast into it's output flange to support the rather large mechanical oiler??? Was the oiler an option on the R model? or did this constitute a different model known as the S??
-
Bills engine above is unique because it's cylinder
and upper crank housing are one casting and lower
crank housing splits apart to remove crankshaft, as on the later U model.Wish i had access to more information such as 1908-1911 GRAY catalog.

We'll just keep looking into the matter, learning about our GRAYs and having a lot of fun too !

I took a closer look at te catalog and the Model U shows an engine that has the one piece cylinder and upper case , plus the exhaust port is facing aft.The Model R does not have a split case and the exhaust por is facing starboard. The Sandsucker Model in my catalog has a one piece case with the cylinder bolted on top a la Model R.
And I think the only difference for theModel S is the oiler. The catalog I have does not show a Model S.
In the front of the catalog, there are four pictures of the factories; a 1906 factory, a 1907 factory, a 1908 -09 factory, and a New Factory constructed in 1910 (photo made from architects drawing) .

Take a look at Harry's page. He has pics of a Gray like I have never seen. Other than the fact that the flywheel may be on the wrong end it has other unique things.

Ernie,
I tried above to put 4 pics up at once but it didn't go !I put exhaust side of Harry's eng beside bill's eng and the castings look the same. Also put intake sides together they seem to match-and flywheel on Harry's was on same end as bill's eng!
BUT the waterpumps and timers don't make sense,
although these both now seem to be Grays ??????
