Hope you get her completed in time!
Best of luck.

Thanks Andrew.

John its a Baby Vinco. We hope to have the boat finished Sunday. The big problem is going to be painting and varnishing.

Cheers

Mark , a beautiful job . Having joined the ranks of the boat owners [ wooden] i will be calling on you blokes for advice and helpful ideas . I have bought a 16ft boat " Juno". I have a selection of engines to put in her but i think i will opt for the Stuart Turner P5

Hi Peter,

Juno is she Carvel, Clinker? I don't own a Stuart but everyone thinks they are pretty good even the people who only like the Oz engines concede(privately) that they are a good engine. Maybe even on par with the Simplex.

God I'm "bugggard". When we bored the shaft log it went in and came out at the right spot, but it had a half inch curve in it. Should of set up a boring bar rather than using an auger and my home made chaser.

To fix it we had to make up a six foot long rasp. A piece of 3/4" gal water pipe with hundreds of slot cut in by a sharp cold chisel.

Unfortunately my helper fell ill and went home today which will set our plans back by two days.

And I thought wooden boat building was a relaxful spiritual experience. It has been until the deadline of the Davistown Putt Putt Regatta.

Anyway the Irreducible will be there even if I have to row or be towed.

Regards

Mark S.

Carvel, Mark . She has a small half cabin which of course houses the engine . I was going to get her out of the water early next week but my helper has to rush of to Perth and i have to go up at the end of the week. Juno came with a good tandem axle trailer . We will float her on to it and i will get her home and do some work . Main job is to get an engine into her.
I have an option on a small vee steam engine which i may install at a later date .
Boring that hole for the shaft does not sound fun !

Anyone who enjoys the Irreducible, and missed this link before, should see the pictures of Brad Shipp's boat at the following link ...

Sounds Good Peter,

BTW try not to let her dry out too much otherwise you will be at best waiting a while for her to swell up again or at worst recaulking.

Good luck with the engine.

We got a few coats of paint on at about 4am the day of the Davistown Regatta. We did not finish the thru hull bits for the cooling system.

Our plan was to go over with two pieces of hose hanging over the side for cooling.

After a couple of hours sleep we got the boat ready to go. The engine wouldn't start. After a lot of running around we managed to borrow a trailer and took the irreducible over by road.

Despite lots of trying during the day the engine refused to start.

We still have quite a bit of painting and varnising to do. Some Pictures below.

As a footnote the day after the regatta we cleaned out the fuel tank and used new fuel. The engine ran perfectly.

Thanks,

I'll be taking a couple of weeks off boat building to attend to some of the more mundane chores that have built up lately.

I'll post some pictures of launch day.

Mark, I was thumbing through the WoodenBoat, 'Fifty Wooden Boats', a plans book. The introduction was followed by an article from Weston Farmer discussing the boat IRREDUCIBLE. I did a search and ended up here. Fantastic job on your boat. I think I am interested in building this boat. I do not know were to begin to obtain an engine for this boat similar to the one installed on your boat. Could you possibly provide leads as to where one might be obtained. I would also be interested in the number of hours you have building this boat. Thanks in advance for you help.

Hi Paul,

For the engine it depends on where you live. Small inboards are relatively easy to find in Australia.

I'm not really sure how long the build took. I tried to do a couple of evenings and a Sunday afternoon a week over a fourteen month period. Although there were many weeks I couldn't and other weeks where I did a lot more.

My best guess would be @350 hrs. The next boat I build will be much quicker as I now sort of know what I'm doing and will not procrastinate as much.

Basically I started this to gain the skills and tools for a much larger restoration project. I'm now about to have a garage sale for about 80% of the tools i purchased as I find I do not need them.

BTW Paul if you do build the boat there is an error in the offset tables. I'm not sure if it is deliberate as i believe Weston Farmer used the irreducble as a lofting exercise in one of his articles.

Best regards

Mark S.

Whit, Look for the Peterborough Ontario based Canadian National Canoe Heritage Museum for starters. This is based in the old Peterboro Canoe factory. They should be able to put you into a network of their connections to help solve your riddle.
