I've been trying to get info on a single cylinder Palmer engine that's been around the garage since 1960 or so. It looks like the YT 1, and has a transmission. Not sure if it's forward/neutral or a reversing box. Anyway, I seem to recall it being referred to as a YT-10.
Is there such an animal?

I don't think there is such a thing as a YT-10... there is a YT-1 and a YT-2. The YT-2 is a two cylinder version. The "YT" stood for Yacht Tender. Does the engine have a nameplate? If so it should have a serial number. The last two digits will be the year it was manufactured.

Are you sure it is a Palmer? There were other single cylinder four cycle engines that looked like the YT. There is added confusion due to the fact that in some areas of the country any marine engine, from any manufacturer, was refered to as a Palmer.

Back again. I looked and couldn't find a name plate, (as Andrew suggested) but the gearbox is a Model YC "alldisc" reversing type. Are there any other identifiers,like unique casting marks?

It is too bad that there is no nameplate... that would tell most of the story.
There are alot of other clues that can help you date a YT-1. Too many to list here. Dick Day has just written a very complete report called:
YT-1 DIFFERENCES OVER THE PRODUCTION YEARS 1921-1947.
It describes casting markings, casting changes, water pumps, carburetors, etc, etc. It includes color photos. I believe that he has a limited number of the reports for sale for $10.00 each. You can contact him about it by email at: [email protected].
