I'm a 240D fan. I found this thread while looking for something else on Google. I have never heard of a "Marine Version" of the OM 616. Where was your boat made? Do you know for sure whether or not your engine was made in Germany? In 1982 an Indian company bought licensing rights and still builds the engine today. I don't know for sure when production ceased in Germany, but it may have lived on for some years, because it was still being used in trucks and minibuses. Did you ever find your manual? What is it you need to fix? There should be a stamping somewhere on your engine block that says "OM616.xxx" The xxx being which version of the OM 616 you have. That would let you know if it is a car, truck, marine, etc. A 1985 Automobile version put out 72HP. Seems like a lot for a sailboat. Must be a big Sail Boat? |

The Boat was custom built in Holland in 1990. I was told that the engine was new but suspect it may be earlier. The boat is steel and weighs 17 ton so it is a bit of a lump to push. I never found a manual and the only reference I have got is a 240d car manual in German. Which does not help much as I cannot read German. There is no real problem with the engine and I was just after a manual for reference. However the engine all though always starts has always been slow turnover. I have replaced the battery, checked connections had the starter tested. Not a big problem just annoying. Maybe it is a slow turn over? The details on the engine read -: Front of block by water pump 6160161401 L/H side of block by injector pump 6160112801 Plate on front of block Teil-NR 616010900 82 Bm-616934 Agg.NR-835157 I would be grate full for any assistance Thanks Mick |

I have a Colvic Watson fitted with a 616 engine which I believe to be 64HP. I have an engine manual from Mercedes purchased about 15 years ago 470 pages. My problem is what size battery is needed to crank the engine and finding it impossible to find replacement rubber end caps for the heat exchanger. I could scan the manual but would be a big email. |

I have a 1986 Celestial 48' with a marinized OM616.916 from Nanni Diesel. They called it the 4.242 model. This is the 72HP model - as I understand this is the truck engine. I am looking for a soft copy of the shop manual as well for trade for the Nanni-diesel specs. Or if you know where I can purchase a hard copy in North America, your help would be much appreciated. Please email |

Very old thread, but I have PDFs of the OM616 engine in English if anyone wants a copy, pm me and I will provide a dropbox download. The OM616 and several other engines were used in many yachts built in the vicinity of Germany. For German designs such as Reinke they are a great engine. Plenty of power, simple mechanical 4 cylinder diesel. They were originally used to power the 240D car and the 207 and 307 vans/trucks and busses. The engines were also used in the Mercedes Unimog U52 and U60 (19701988) I understand that the OM series engines were built in Germany until 1990 when their production transferred to Mercedes Spain. In the 1980s Mercedes did a deal with Force Motors, an Indian company, for production, under licence, for use in that companies SUVs. At that time the Indian economy was very closed to foreign investment and Force Motors had relationships with a number of European vehicle brands. Force also produced a turbo charged version of the OM616 for use in their Trax Gurkha. The engine is called the Bajaj Tempo OM616 and is rated at 91 bhp (68 kW). On a personal note I have an OM616 in my yacht and sadly it seized recently. So I decided to replace it with another used OM616 engine from a 240D and rebuild it. We're in the process of doing that still and have found it quite challenging. |
