I need parts for my 330 Gray Marine. My distributor Auto-Lite IGW-4113 needs new ignition point set - IGW-3038S. Where do I find points? Alternatively, what replacement points can be used (Champion etc.)? |

If thats a 6 cylinder F series engine then you should be able to get them from Valubilt 1.888 828 3276 tell them you need parts for a massy 44-6. They don't show the auto-lite numbers in the cataloge so ask them to check.I'am sure my local NAPA could get them too,but they would be 3x more expensive |

Perrtronix has a pointless ignition system. I think I paid $109 for the kit and an additional $50 for the resin filled coil, 40,000 volts. It would require a changeover to 12 volt, but is a more efficient burn of gases and better fuel mileage, power and better starting. In addition to lower upkeep. With the cost of gas the way it is it should pay for itself in a short period of time. |

Thanks for advise. I have just added pointless ignition system and it worked well. Can't say whether gas consumption has been reduced. To your info, I live in Norway and we pay more than $7 pr US gallon for gas !!! I believe this is 3 to 4 times US prices? Most of Europe is at the same level. That makes it worth looking for anything that can reduce consumption |

Pointless ignition may not save much in gas but in (upkeep) time, mechanic charges plus the retail which the boatyard is sure to jack up for the parts. You must also consider how often you have to replace the points and codensor. In both systems Distributor cap and rotor will need changing occasionally. |

Actually, distributor cap and rotor last longer with an electronic system which is probably one of it's greatest advantages. The performance of an engine with an electronic distributor is about similiar to a points system that is properly maintained. Electronic distributors are definetly an improvement over the old points system but to expect significatly increased horse power or fuel economy by changing over to it is not realistic. |

There should be a reference tag on your distributer which includes the manufacturer and model refence. That will get you to the right Pertronix for your engine.
I assume that you are asking about your Fireball Six.
A couple of pictures would help.
I know that some folks struggle with uploading pictures, but it's worth the effort. Simply follow the instructions

Im having starting issues, and I believe my distributor was rotated out of timing. How do I find the proper spot? |

You can find the approximate right position using this method.
Disconnect battery.
Remove the spark plugs.
Find the order of cylinder firing usually cast into the head.
Turn the flywheel until the cylinder next to the flywheel in TDC ( you should be able to see the valves close though the spark plug hole)
Connect an Ohmmeter onto the points ( you should have close to 0 ohms) , then slowly shift the body of the distributor until you see the points open - that's when you get the spark.
The timing , using this method, will set the distributor to retarded. This should help start the engine.
You can then shift the position of the distributor so the engine runs better.
Ernie, I'm sure can provide more detail for this method. I hope this helps. |
