Iluka History Group, NSW, Australia are searching for a T & M Engine. We would love to obtain this motor for a display in our Museum.
Below is some history about the engine and Iluka.
The Termatt & Monahan Company of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, was known as T&M. In 1892 Mr. John Termatt and Mr. Louis Monahan formed a partnership to build gas and gasoline engines. This business was sold out in 1902.
In 1903 Mr. Termatt and Mr. Monahan formed another company called T&M. Along with a partner, E. Homer Fahrney, their business consisted mainly of manufacturing small marine engines.
These proved very successful; larger and larger marine engines followed using multiple cylinders up to a large 190HP, 4 cylinder.

By 1906 the T&M Company was building small engine-driven generators for farm and home use. Some of their pumps were used to help build the Panama Canal, and some were with Admiral Byrd on his expedition to the South Pole.

1912 was the year that T&M built their first 4 cycle engine with a 2 1/2inch bore and 3 1/2 inch stroke.

1914 was the year that T&M came out with the hopper-cooled, 4 cycle farm engine. It was also the same year that T&M marine engine business reorganized under the name of Universal Motor Company. The marine engine business became Universal, and Mr. Termatt and Mr. Monahan retained the T&M Mfg. Company and built farm type engines under the old T&M name. These engines were built in 1, 1 1/2, 2 1/2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 HP sizes.

The engines up to 4 HP used a spark plug and jump-spark ignition. Their engines 6 HP and over used a make-and-break igniter ignition system.

The life of T&M was actually very short. Just how many engines were built is not known. However, it is believed that there were not a great many made. These engines were built from 1914 until 1920. (www.oldmarineengine.com)

In 1909 the Maclean local newspaper, the �Argus�, carried an advertisement for T & M marine engines. J.G. Kempnich, a Maclean businessman, was the agent for these and other marine engines. Apparently at that time, a number of local fishermen purchased T & M engines from Mr. Kempnich and had them installed in their boats, including a Mr. Swiney, Mr. Tom Sutton and Mr. J Williamson, who owned the �Kyogle.�
Iluka�s Mail Contractor Mr. Bill Hickey owned a boat called the �Phfrane� which had a 5 H.P. "one-lung" single cylinder �T & M� engine installed.
It has been stated that, �For such a small engine and considering its vintage, it was remarkable in having a "make and break" system of reversing. This was achieved by a round instrument on the top front of the engine.� (J. Watt)
It is understood that Mr. Kempnich was so enthusiastic about the �T & M� that he published the following verse in the �Argus� newspaper (M.D.H.S.)
�THE BEST MOTOR ENGINES � THE ENTHUSIASM OF A USER.
See that your batteries are O.K.
Be sure your plugs are clean;
Adjust the carburettor, and
Turn on the gasoline.
Then if she is a �T & M�,
As everybody knows �
You give the fly wheel half a turn,
And zip! Away she goes!
CHORUS:
Chug � Chug � Chug � Chug
She�ll never miss a turn!
As long as you have gasoline
That�s guaranteed to burn.
Reverse or come to a stop.
It doesn�t matter which,
For all you have to do to start,
Is turn the timing switch.
MORAL:
Buy a �T & M� and be happy.�
However, some were heard to say that "T & M" stood for "Trouble and Misery."

MACLEAN

Mr. J.G. Kempnich has installed into a 22ft. boat with a 5ft. beam a 8 h.p. T. and M. engine, which on several times attained a speed of 14 miles per hour. The boat glides through the water without any unnecessary vibration, and is admitted to be the most successful and speedy of its kind on the river.

Very old T&M single cylinder good mechanical condition but is without the pedestal igniton timer.

It's interesting to see the atmospheric valve on the intake on the first engine. That maks for an interesting and challenging casting.
The second engine has more conventional intake valves.
Gray used them too. Most others use a 3 port arrangement.
