Hello, first post. I'm trying to narrow down a boat design for a future build using a Yanmar 1GM 6.5 HP diesel I recently salvaged from a dead sailboat. I'm looking at a 1907 yawl boat design from Mystic Seaport Museum. The yawl boat plan shows the engine as a Lathrop "Type 6" and gives a serial number #25277. I can't find anything on "Type 6". Am I correct in assuming "Type 6" should read "6 HP"? If so, is the little 6.5 HP Yanmar a fair comparison to the big Lathrop 6 HP? Thank you. |

Google: Lathrop Type 6, 6hp. There is an article in the Sept 2001 "gasenginemagazine website about a Lathrop Type 6, 6hp being displayed at the first ever Chesepeake Antique Marine Engine meet. A Calvin Williams from Gloucester VA had one on display. Reportedly from about 1915. No picture though. Perhaps Mystic Seaport Marine Engine archives has information on the engine. Hope this helps. |

There are lots of Lathrop pics and info here on OME. Use the search function at the top of the page. Link below Put lathrop in the search for box and set the match method to whole words only. http://www.oldmarineengine.com/cgi-bin/discus/search.cgi |
