Here's the diagram of the configuration that I use. There are other variants of the idea, and all of them work. I have found that the 'optional' resistor in series with the coil can be as high as 5 or 6 ohms and you can still get a really healthy spark. The minimum power rating for the resistor is 5 Watts - 7 or 10 Watts is OK. I have also used the "coil-over-plug" coils to great success instead of the conventional 12V automotive coil. The key thing that is an ABSOLUTE MUST is to NEVER, EVER operate the ignition box without a spark gap -doing so will very likely result in an internal short circuit in the coil or an internal insulation breakdown. I prefer to use Mylar film capacitors (condensers) that have a minimum 600V DC rating. Capacitors with lower voltage ratings might work for a while but ultimately they breakdown. I've probably made close to 100 of these for other folks over the past 7 years and the only time there are issues, is when folks try to use a 6 V battery - this system NEEDS a 12V battery. Miro Please ask questions. I also urge folks to take the time to make a nice wooden box with brass hardware to achieve a period look. |
