I was given this piece of equipment to sell for a friend of my son's. The piece says Buda Imperial Special Grinder / Buda Company / Harvey Illinois. I have to assume that a grinder would have come from the original factory / perhaps in the making of marine equipment? Has anyone ever heard of a Buda Grinder??? |

I am also looking for info on this item. Mine is imprinted/ Buda Liberty special grinder/. The Buda Co. was bought out by Allis Chambers (tractors) in 1954. They made heavy duty engines that have been associated with trains, tractors and now marine applications. That is all that I have been able to find out. My grinder is hand operated and very heavy duty and well built. Since my Google search found your post as the only match on the net, I have to assume that the grinders must be very rare. If anyone has more info, please e-mail me. |

I came across this hand operated grinder imprinted with Buda Liberty Special Grinder/The Buda Co./Harvey, Illinois. It belonged to my great uncle. I cannot find out very much about the grinder. |

I am wondering the same, I was looking in one of our buildings this evening and saw it. I use use to sharpen my hatchet on it as a kid. It came from my late grandfather, which was given to him by his brother in law. I saw no years or anything, it is still mounted to a bench. I can't help you much besides tell you I am curious as well and use to love to see how fast I could get the thing going when I was a kid and watch the sparks fly. I never knew about Buda until this evening, I am just in my thirties so I am rather curious and on the hunt myself on how old the machine actually is and its worth (probably my childhood memories) but cannot seem to find much with any searches either. I will come back and let you know if I do. Sorry for the long winded story...Nice to meet you all.  |

I see this is an old post, but I'm finding this to be the only place to possibly get info on my family's Buda Grinder. I have the same memories with ours! I think all the boys of the last several generations have tried to get ghis baby spinning as fast as possible! lol It's been at my Great grandparents house as long as I remember. I'm turning 40 this year,now that both of them are no longer with us I can't ask what they know about it's history. Just wondering if anyone found any info other than the company started in 1881 building equipment for the train industry. |

These are typical hand-powered bench grinders used for general sharpening. Nothing to do with marine engines except the possible connection with the makers of Buda diesels. I would suggest discussing these on another forum such as perhaps "the garage forum"; google it. |
