While running the Fantail the other day, the engine started getting hot. Luckily, the water lines are reinforced clear tubing and I could see bubbles from the Perko 493-3 raw water strainer to the pump and some water was flowing. The raw water strainer's cork clean-out cover gasket was just too stiff and compressed to do its job so it was allowing air in (and oozing water when the engine was stopped). Luckily I carry duct tape and was able to make a temporary gasket. My main question is whether I could make a new gasket and where to source the appropriate cork material and how thick it should be. I'm guessing 3/16" would be right. Interestingly, Perko switched from cork to rubber and they say not to try to interchange the two. I haven't seen each model (old and new style) castings to compare any design changes that would make this important. I may just buy a gasket set but was wondering about the material just the same and any info also may help someone else in the future as well.
