I have just very succesfully tried the alfoil &caustic soda treatment for derusting some tools. worked incredibly well. Just wrap the item loosley in aluminium foil and immerse in a sloution of about 10% caustic soda in water.... wait till the foil is disolved & viola....

Claude -

Some particulars plse. What was your source for the caustic soda - Draino? And how much did you add to a quart of water, were the parts etched also or was just the rust attacked and how long did it take?

Caustic Soda from the hardware shop in 500gm tubs. I used 100gms to a litre of water. Took about 8 hrs. but if You warmed up the solution quicker results would be gained. Experiment - it worked well for me first try. Only seems to work on smaller items- have not tried it on large engine parts.
