I have just purchased a Savage Dolphin (displacement hull) 15 foot boat with a Stuart Turner twin inside her. I haven’t tried to start her and she’s been out of the water for a while now. In fact, I don’t know how to start it at all really. The only markings I can make out on it are on the g/b 435635 or so? I want to get some precautionary measures in place before trying to start her up. If she doesn’t go, I’ll throw out the Stuart and get a little diesel or something for her.
There are some crank handles with it – 1 for the motor one for the g/b. Do they crank clockwise or anticlockwise if you crank from the rear / stern end of the boat?
I found out the suggested petrol ratio is 50:1 could somebody confirm that?
Is there anything I should do before firing it up? Or some routine I need to follow ….
It will be started on land first, so can I run (thinking positively) her for a short while without water going into the cooler? Or do I bang a hose on the intake, or some such?
Also, I’ll replace the plugs … with a set of??
The lady who sold me the boat said her husband never had any other motor than the one in her … it’s pretty old, but I want to get her going and retain her in good nick.

Any suggestions on anything that can help to me to get her going, and maintain her will be appreciated.
And finally – do they print manuals for these motors still?

As you can tell I have nought idea on where to start – also I’m hany with tools but not with money at the moment.

Jeremy,

Did you buy this boat out of the Melbourne Trading post in the past couple of weeks? and was the boat in Watsonia? If so I live nearby in Greensborough and have the same motor in my boat.

I can help with copies of a manual.
Crank it clockwise at the stern. It will only go one way as the starting chain free wheels the wrong way.
I wouldn't run it for more than a minute without water. It is safer to connect the hose.
50:1 ratio is OK I use a castrol Outboard oil "for water cooled engines".
Clean the plugs, or replace. I will have to check which ones I run. They are readily available, but you may have to order them. My son works in a mower shop and he odered NGK which were delivered overnight.

These motors are very smooth and quite for a two stroke. Once sorted, mine starts very easily

If you have spark and fuel at carby it should run. Flood it a little or use the choke, if fitted to start. The is an idling cam on the throttle linkage in front of the gearstick, up against the block. This is the only way to increase rev's when in neutral.

Thanks for the information and tips .. right down to the direction I should crank her. You were very helpful, and have a vast knowledge of these motors. You've sold me into keeping it inthe boat.
