It's about time to decoke the Simplex. In the past I,ve used caustic soda on air cooled 2 strokes(cast iron) which works a treat or diesel fuel which works well but slower.Any idea if this will affect a salt water cooled cylinder

Kevin,

Caustic Soda should not affect the cylinder. As long as you maintain the PH at around 11 it will passivate the iron(stop the corrosion process). Don't let it fall below 9 or above 13 or you will greatly accelerate any existing corrosion.

From memory a 2.5% solution should give you this range.

I don't have any experience with decoking with soda ash though(I usually scrape etc).

IMHO I don't like caustic soda, one splash in the eye and you've got problems. I usually use soda ash(laundry soda). For a PH of 11 you need a 5% solution.
