Hello....I posted a topic earlier on palmer pw27 engines and would like to know availability of replacement parts.......If I were to put one in a boat.. 1. are there any aftermarket parts avail? or do I just buy a spare engine? 2. what parts are most likely to fail? 3. has anyone converted to "closed loop cooling"?or other aux. cooling(i.e. pump with anti-freeze and radiator)..can this be done with the palmer and run well in sailboat...will it help pro-long engine-life...or deter the corrosion issues (especially in salt-water) discussed? 4. what about spark plugs...gaskets... coils...etc.... can "standard" ones be found? or have others made/retro-fitted gaskets/coils etc. as necessary? 5. I hope these questions don't seem to "dumb" 6. Somehow these old engine just have that "old engine" appeal...Am I silly for considering this engine?.... 7. Are ther other engines with more avail. parts etc. in the 8 hp range? Thanks.....your completely naive (but somehow very intrigued) first-time engine installing guy without a clue about these old engines Bob |

The PW-27 is a Wisconsin model AHE engine with AFH piston. The Palmer parts that are very difficult to find are the cylinder and head. The reverse gear is Paragon OXKB. The engine was often run with a heat exchanger with 50:50 anti-freeze and and water when the boat was used in salt water. Best deal is to find a good freshwater cooled engine and use a heat exchanger if you want to run in salt water. With a heat exchanger you run salt water as the coolant and the engine never sees salt water. You don't use a radiator as that is what the heat exchanger is for. My reccomendation is to buy a small marine deisel and fresh water cool it. Antique marine engines can be a real problem if you are not handy with fixing them. |

I'm looking for top half of a Palmer PW 27. Mine is inoperable since the exhaust port has corroded thru. It was used in salt water for 37 years. |

Difficult to find a useable cylinder or head. Still best bet is to buy a freshwater cooled engine and canabize it for the needed parts. If it is a good engine then swap engines so you don't have to worry about valve and piston clearances etc. |
