See previous threads click here click here click here Once again working the fantail. No it didn't sell. I had to open up the aft bulkhead to get into the fantail area for steering maintenance. Once I did this I needed to make a hew removable bulkhead cover. This lead to other cosmetic work. In the first pic the light color behind the aft seat is a cardboard pattern. I now have the cover cut and need to stain and varnish it. Once this was done I decided to put strips of wood on the seats to get rid of the painted plywood. The bow seats are done and just need a few coats of varnish. Also the boat finally has a name. My Grandmother's name was Minnie Belle. The 8 inch dia bronze plaque is from my Grandfather's boat. He had a 75 foot Coastguard cutter. This plaque was on top of the aft towing bit. Gramp's boat didn't make it through the 38 hurricane. I have the anchor lantern and this plaque. Hopefully it will fit in the center of the new aft bulkhead. Yea I know the cockpit sole and ceiling to hide the fiberglass on the sides... It never ends,

Ernie - a boat is never done - you just keep on having fun with it. I suspect that in a year or two, you'd regret selling the thing. All that you would have is money ( an old Dutch proverb) I like the plaque - great that you have it to share. Miro |

Yes it is neat to have the plaque and anchor lantern. From the few pics I have this is what she looked like. When he bought her at auction she was complete less engine/s and armament Photo courtesy of the Jefferson Historical Society |

My Dad had a habit of writing on things if there was more info. So I wasn't really surprised when I found additional info on the back of the plaque pictured above when I took it off the wood my Dad had mounted it on so I can mount it in my boat. It reads "Recovered by Ernest E. Darrow April 1st 1951. This plaque is the nameplate from the top of the stern towing bit of my Dad's (Clayton B. Darrow) boat which was lost Sept 21, 1938 During the Great Hurricane. This boat was a 75' Cost Guard Cutter (retired)" From the information above I am guessing the wreck or at least part of it laid on the beach for almost 13 years. Interestingly enough the wreck was on Mamacoke Island in Waterford, CT right across the Thames River from the Submarine Base which in Groton, CT.

After getting some grief from family members about taking the plaque that my Dad made from my Grandfathers boat I removed it from the fantail launch. A friend at work made the "Thyme" plaque for me.

A really fantastic looking boat Ernie - it must be very very hard to give up such a boat that has so much of your family history attached to it. |

Maybe 5 or 6 of us could form a consortium and purchase the boat and travel around taking folks for a ride for a fee to recoup the cost. |

I had her out on the lake for several hours just before winterizing. Most of the time running dead slow. I am always amazed how good and easily these old engines run. I had run her so long at dead slow I was wondering if the spark plug was going to foul. It didn't! When I winterized her I took the plug out just to see how it looked. Much to my surprise it was light tan everywhere. I will say though that these Gray engines with a rotary timer do NOT reverse as easily as a Detroit with a swing handle timer. NO I did NOT run into anything. Unless you count lily pads out in the middle of the lake. When playing or practicing reversing the engine I usually just pick a patch of lily pads or throw a life jacket in the water so I have a reference point to know how well, or not I am doing stopping the boat where I want to. |
