Flywheel markings say Pierce Engine Co., Racine, Wisconsin. The flywheel is 16". Raised number on edge is # 4638. All engine parts are marked # 24 except water pump push rod two piece marked #13. This is a 4" bore 4" stroke. Exhaust was port but I changed it to starboard. My question is the bronze air intake tube is missing something. What is it? A filter or what? Any help on the year or any information on the tube would be greatly appreciated. |

Bruce Goss has one of these. Do a search here for pictures. I have one with a small Racine Engine Co. builders plate and no nomenclature cast into the flywheel. Very nice pictures posted here! Great picture of the carb preheat air fitting/routing to a mixer. |

The fitting looks to have quick connect notches around the diameter. This may have allowed the engine to be tank cooled in a boat rather than using lake water. Just a thought. Bruce |

Isn't that part of the air pre heater like the 2 holes on the other side of the cylinder? Appears that water in is at the pump and water out is at the top above the odd fitting That is my guess anyway |

Judging by the location of the bronze fitting it must enter into the warm air channel cast into the block below the water jacket. That warm air is ducted into the mixer via a manifold as is shown on the Bruce Goss engine. I have a rough casting of this manifold William, if you are interested. As a matter of fact I have castings for the complete mixing valve. If you email me we can discuss it. I have restored a complete Pierce engine just like your engine.} |
