I have an example of the 4 HP engine in a no-name boat built around 1900-1910 (I think). I need help in identifying someone local to the Province of Quebec or Eastern Ontario, who might be able to diagnose the cause of the engine not firing after one spark. Would love to find a shop that could do a rebuild or repair. Thanks.}plaque} |

What's the history of the engine: was it rebuilt? Did it run properly before and how long since it did? Is the correct fuel and oil mixture being used? Has the compression been tested? |

It could be that you are running a too rich mixture - try leaning it out more than you think.
Also if it fires once - pull the plug out and see if it is wet with gasoline - should be fairly dry.
Are you using the "bump" start method?
Here I assume that you have a good healthy bright blue and noisy spark
I have a pal in Gananoque who volunteers at the Clayton museum - he might have a contact there who should be able to help.

Is the compression good, does the engine bounce back when pulled against compression or does it pull right through? It's common for a two cycle with a lot of blow by to fire once and not fire for several more pulls. The first pop fills the crankcase with combustion gasses blown by the rings, it takes several cranks to purge the crankcase and get a proper mixture in to the cylinder, when it fires you start all over again. Usually a generous squirt of oil in the cylinder followed by several revs to coat the walls will give temporary results. |

I will bet that someone rebuilt the engine and got the piston in backwards. It will always give just one pop and never again until primed again etc. I bought one real cheap once due to this "problem" and it made for a fantastic engine once the deflector on the piston was on the correct side. Check it out. |
