This engine was used in 42ft. crash boats (air-sea rescue boats) during WWII. It was a straight six, overhead valve engine with two carbs. Does anyone have any more information on the engine, or can you direct me to a website that does? Thanks for any help with this. Carlos Ruth 561-694-9467 |

Greetings, What information are you looking for on this engine? By the way, the Sea Raider was a 1,414 cubic inch V-12 engine rated between 300 and 450 HP during the war. It would have been a good choice for Crash Boat operation. Many, if not most, crash boats used a pair (one right and one left) Hall-Scott Defender. They were 2,182 cubic inches of V-12 naturally aspirated gasoline engine of 650 HP and a butt load of torque. The Kermath 6 cylinder that had two carbs was the Sea Wolf at that time. It was used in a lot of different boats with her 225 HP from 678 cubic inches. Cheers, Lew "The Left Coast Sterling Guy" |

Lou, I run a website about AAF & USAF crash boats and I'm looking to add information on the Kermath engines used on those boats. Two of the V-12 were commonly used on the 104ft. crashboat, later replaced by Hall-Scotts or Packards. In the 42 ft. crash boat 2 of the 6cyl. Kermaths were commonly used for power. From a drawing in the 42' Operator's Manual I saw what appeared to be 2 carburetors and I had read somewhere that they each produced about 250 hp. From that little bit of information I'm trying to develop enough information to write an article for the website. For the most part the crew members are very old or deceased, so they are not a reliable source of information. |
