the camshaft is hollow and the smaller shaft extends out the sides of the case for the timer and the water pump.
the pump eccentric end has a key but wont come off, the shaft wont move within the camshaft in either direction. I am not sure which way it is intended to come out and do not want to take any risks.
what is the way this comes apart?

ok, update, I got a couple offline replies as no one is 100% sure about the way this is supposed to come apart, so I will leave the camshaft in place and manually clean and paint the outside of this housing.
I can only do that because the bushings seem to have an acceptably small amount of play. hopefully they won't seep oil too much, and I'm not sure how they are sealed.
if anyone sees this topic who has actually taken one down, it would be nice to post the knowlege here for anyone who does not have the option and has to replace the bushings.

Did you mark the cam in some manner so it can be put back into the proper relationship with the crankshaft; timing it to the crank? |

I am going through some of my old topics before asking a few questions since many have been answered (thank you for those). As to the camshaft, Ernie happened to have a camshaft apart and I took some pictures and will share those now, because someone else with a YT will want to know and as far as I could find, it is not on OME. The camshaft is in two parts, a center shaft about 1/2" diameter, and a cam and gear center casting, with Woodruff keys. That being said, I was told that these break very often instead of come apart, and it is inadvisable to disassemble unless there is no choice. Hope this helps someone someday.
