We're all familiar with THE Continental, that started in 1903 as Autocar Eqpmt Co, Chicago,that per conflict with Autocar truck co changed its name to Continental Mtr Mfg Co., Lake street adds, later relocating Muskegon MI and Detroit...
A SECOND Continental was the Continental Engine Co., Fisher Bldg, later Kingsbury and Huron sts, also in Chicago, sometimes stating works in Dallas City, IL...the engineer/designer involved was John Pfeffer, in case his name's familiar...
Per ads estab 1895, incptd 1905, the firm reportedly sold 1913/14 to L C Erbes, then in process of building Cyclecars and full size LCE car...
Ads claimed full line of engines, from 1 cyl marine to 250 HP producer gas engine for a dredge, incl 4 and 6cyl verticals and, in a 1907 article on their air cooleds, a V8, the line drawing looking like a water cooled...so far I have no evidence the V8 was produced, despite tha article saying it was one of the line the company "built"...
Some Continental Engine Co ads referred to the engines as "Western" engines, posibly per conflict with the other Continental, which ran ads 1905-07 saying "beware of imitations" and such...
The question is, did these amount to anything in marine use, or are they, or Pfeffer, at all familiar?? |

Yes, all too familiar; lots of ads online...I'll check my notes in the AM (it's late here!!)
There's a period trade mag that has two 1/2 page ads, one by Cont'l Mtr Mfg Co, one by Cont'l Engine Co, ON THE SAME PAGE...
Most ads I found were (from memory) 05-08 or so...
One list of several engines, incl their (?) 11/2-2 HP 2 cycle marine is in Gas Engine Vol7 1-1-05 pg 89.
I'll have to decipher my scribbling for the article on their air-cooleds that includes their V8, and the one describing their 1 Cyl reversible and a new transmission...... |

My apologies for delay...
Desc of that 1Cyl reversible should be in that Gas Eng issue above, on pg 213..Articles in Modern Machinery Vol 19 pg 290 and Gas Engine Vol 8 pgs 25 and 153 should also include ref's to their V8...
Horseless Age Vol 16 1905 has a small ad that refers to their "Western" engines, as if a brand name---sorry, no page # on this Gglbk: all covers, some ads at end of copy...
If Pfeffers letter hadn't said he was designer of the Continental Engine Co engine in the Van roadster, I'd've guessed they were actually engine brokers, peddling others engines... |
